The German Unity Transport Project (VDE: Verkehrsprojekt Deutsche Einheit) No. 8 Nürnberg - Erfurt - Leipzig/Halle - Berlin upgrading and new construction line is part of the 1992 and 2003 Bundesverkehrswegepläne. The Leipzig/Halle - Berlin upgrading line forms the VDE 8.3 project section. The section is also part of the Berlin - Munich high-speed route. At European level, the route is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) on the axis from Scandinavia to Italy (Mediterranean).
The transport objective of the Leipzig/Halle - Berlin section was achieved by upgrading the track to a speed of 200 km/h. In the Bitterfeld - Halle section, the objective of increasing the speed to 200 km/h is still outstanding.
The aim of the project is to replace the national train control system (LZB) on the Leipzig/Halle - Berlin section (route no. 6132 or 6411) with the standardised European Train Control System (ETCS). At the same time, the line section Bitterfeld - Halle (line no. 6132 or 6411) is to be equipped with ETCS for the first time. The installation of ETCS on the Bitterfeld - Halle section will create the conditions for increasing the speed from the current 160 km/h to 200 km/h.
The technical adaptation of the electronic interlocking is linked to the ETCS equipment.
