Nuremberg – Passau – Border

From Nuremberg via Regensburg and Passau to the Austrian border, the control and safety technology will be digitalised on the approximately 220 km long line. In the first step, the interlockings will be upgraded and renewed as part of the general refurbishment in 2026. In the second step, the entire route will be equipped with ETCS.

Different systems and incompatible technologies in European rail transport repeatedly cause considerable effort and time losses at borders. The EU's European Deployment Plan (EDP) aims to drive forward the cross-border standardisation of systems and technologies in order to significantly improve train passability in Europe.

The Nuremberg – Passau – Border EDP project involves equipping the sections between Nuremberg – Feucht and Passau – Border with the standardised European Train Control System (ETCS). The digitalisation of the control and safety technology (LST) is being driven forward on the 220 km long route in eastern Bavaria. This goes hand in hand with the renewal and adaptation of the interlockings and the operating systems within the interlockings. The extensive construction work will be carried out in two phases.

In the first construction phase, the signal boxes between Feucht and Regensburg and between Obertraubling and Passau will be renewed and upgraded in conjunction with the planned general refurbishments in 2026. In addition, modernisation work on the control and safety technology will take place along both sections of line, which will require a lot of track possession time. Among other things, the cabling of the signalling technology will be renewed on a fibre optic basis and converted to an encrypted, internal railway IP network. This modernisation of the signalling technology not only increases safety standards, but also improves network availability and stability, which leads to more efficient train operations. In addition, these preparatory measures will create the necessary technical and structural conditions for the subsequent ETCS equipment.

In the second construction phase, the line will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 with signals by 2030. This conversion will make the line future-proof and more reliable. Once the project is complete, "increasing the number of blocks" will be made possible, which will control train traffic more efficiently. Increasing the number of blocks means that trains can run at shorter distances from each other without jeopardising safety. This in turn opens up the opportunity to further strengthen rail transport and relieve the pressure on the roads.
