Hagen – Unna – Hamm
The complete renovation of the line from Hagen via Unna to Hamm plays a key role in connecting NRW to northern Germany. As part of this project, a modern interlocking is now being built on the Hagen network and ETCS equipment is being installed along the entire route.

The complete renovation of the line from Hagen via Unna to Hamm plays a key role in connecting North Rhine-Westphalia to the rail network and enables a direct connection between the metropolitan regions of Cologne and the Ruhr area to northern Germany and Berlin. Due to its strategic location and high importance, the renewal and expansion of the infrastructure along this corridor is of great relevance.
Digitale Schiene Deutschland is responsible for the ETCS and interlocking equipment in the general renovation. The LST layout standards, which specify and describe the equipment for the general renovation, are being reviewed in the course of the new ETCS equipment and integrated where possible (LST). The main objective is always to implement the European Train Control System (ETCS), a uniform train control system throughout Europe, to ensure interoperability. In conjunction with the planned block adjustments, this modern train control system enables more precise monitoring of trains and faster response times. This improves the punctuality and reliability of rail traffic. In addition, the project includes the upgrading of the Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway (GSM-R), which is required as the mobile communications standard for train control by ETCS. The modernization and optimization of this system will ensure reliable and secure communication along the route.
The project begins behind Hagen Central Station on line 2550, runs along lines 2840 (Schwerte BF – Heide junction) and 2103 (BF Holzwickede – BF Unna) and ends with line 2932 (Hamm HBF) on the line in front of Hamm Central Station. The area under consideration has a length of approximately 56 km. ETCS is being introduced as an additional train control system. This enables more robust operation. The previous train control system, Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung (PZB), will continue to function as a fallback system until further notice and will then be completely replaced by ETCS.
As part of the project, cables for ETCS track equipment will be laid and control units, such as signals, will be replaced. The existing interlockings in the Hagen area will be upgraded to an IUZ and replaced by a modern interlocking in the Hamm area. Further infrastructure measures, such as new points, will be implemented as part of the general renovation in further projects.
In a parallel project, the Hamm electronic interlocking (ESTW, 2nd construction stage) is being built at the same time in the Hamm network. The Hagen network currently has the central ESTW (ESTW-Z) Hagen with sub-control center 1 (UZ1) and sub-control center 2 (UZ2). In this area, the relevant sections of track will be removed from the ESTW-Z and a new digital interlocking (DSTW, 1st construction stage) will be built. The DSTW forms the basis of the ETCS equipment on these sections of track.
