There are many different train control systems in Europe, which makes cross-border rail transport more difficult and therefore acts as an obstacle to the single European market. To overcome these barriers and promote the harmonisation of rail transport, the European Train Control System (ETCS) is being introduced as a uniform train control system across Europe on the trans-European railway lines, the so-called TEN network.

In accordance with the European regulation TEN Regulation 1315/2013/EU of 11 December 2013 (Article 39 (2) a) iii)), there is an obligation under European law to equip German corridor sections with ETCS throughout. The section of the TEN corridor from Venlo (Netherlands) via Krefeld and Viersen to Grevenbroich in North Rhine-Westphalia will therefore be equipped with ETCS Level 2 with signals (ETCS L2mS).

The route is part of the European Deployment Plan (EDP). Including many feeder lines, a total of 117 kilometres of track will be equipped with ETCS. To create the conditions for the integrated ETCS L2mS system on the line, the existing line will first be prepared for the new technology in accordance with the regulations. To this end, the existing mechanical and relay interlockings will be replaced with modern interlockings. Then, in a second step, the ETCS L2mS-compliant technology will be implemented.
