Border crossing Denmark: Padborg – Flensburg

The line in the area of the German-Danish border crossing will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 on the basis of the existing ESTW. The route section is highly relevant for the European freight transport network and the project will provide it with transnational and modern control and safety technology.

The transportation of goods by rail across national borders is of great importance for the European economy and is to be simplified as part of the European Deployment Plan (EDP). Currently, European countries have different train control systems, which pose challenges for cross-border freight traffic. The European Train Control System (ETCS) is intended to harmonize the European railroad system. To this end, the equipment of the routes of the Trans-European Transport Network corridors (TEN-T corridors) with ETCS was fixed via the EDP by 2030.

The German-Danish border crossing is located on the ScanMed TEN corridor (Scandinavian – Mediterranean). The separate Flensburg – Maschen project will ensure that the Denmark – Maschen section can run smoothly with ETCS Level 2 with signals (ETCS Level 2 mit Signalen: ETCS L2mS). The measure will establish the interoperability of the control and safety technology in the European freight network on this section of the route so that rail traffic can be controlled and secured with ETCS L2 on both the German and Danish sides.

In this project, a line totaling 15 km from Padborg station via Flensburg Weiche station to Flensburg passenger station will be equipped with ETCS L2mS. The existing technology can be used for this, as the existing electronic interlocking (ESTW) can be converted for ETCS operation. For this purpose, the existing ESTW will be upgraded to ETCS L2mS. The new control and safety technology at the border crossing will be commissioned together with the ETCS equipment in the Flensburg – Maschen project and the ETCS Radio Block Center (RBC) in Flensburg.
