Border crossing Czech Republic: Schirnding – Marktredwitz
The existing control and safety technology is being modernised on 15 km of the line between Marktredwitz and the Czech border. In a first step, the existing relay interlocking in Schirnding will be replaced by a modern ESTW. In the second stage, 8 km of the Arzberg – border (CZ) section will be equipped with ETCS.

The standardised European Train Control System (ETCS) will be introduced on the section of line between Arzberg and the Czech border on the Marktredwitz line (= start: behind the station) up to the Czech border. As the introduction of ETCS on this route requires modernisation of the existing control and safety technology, this will first be brought up to the current state of the art. The first step will therefore be to replace the existing relay interlocking in Schirnding with a modern Thales/GTS L90 electronic interlocking (ESTW) and to replace the three level crossings 1:1. The ETCS line will then be equipped.
ETCS is being introduced as part of the European Deployment Plan (EDP). The EDP is an EU implementing regulation for the Europe-wide introduction of ETCS in rail transport.
The project will promote cross-border rail transport across Europe by developing and equipping new and joint interlocking and ETCS technology between Germany and the Czech Republic. As part of the construction of the new interlocking, compatible block technology will be jointly developed between the two countries. As part of the ETCS equipment, an ETCS-guided transition between the two countries will be jointly developed and used for the first time. In future, trains travelling from Germany towards the Czech Republic will be able to switch from the previous train control system PZB (Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung) to the ETCS train control system before the border and continue seamlessly with ETCS in the Czech Republic. This also applies vice versa for trains travelling from the Czech Republic towards Germany. Further projects between Germany and the Czech Republic will benefit from this development in the future.
