Systematically addressing errors in ETCS specifications to ensure interoperability
Changes and error corrections regularly arise in ETCS specifications during development and operation. To ensure interoperability, such corrections must be addressed in a systematic manner. A DB InfraGO internal Error Correction Process provides transparency and supports a structured approach to change and error management.
Seamless cross-border and digital rail operations depend on the reliable interaction of vehicles and infrastructure across Europe. The foundation for this is provided by the technical specifications of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and the European Train Control System (ETCS). Errors or ambiguities in these specifications can affect safety, stability and interoperability.
To address such challenges systematically, DB InfraGO AG has developed an Error Correction Process that is compliant with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs). The process complements existing European regulations and defines a structured approach to handling errors in ETCS specifications. It covers the identification and assessment of errors, sector-wide coordination, as well as subsequent error resolution and documentation.
A particular focus is placed on the processing of so-called Baseline Compatibility Assessment (BCA) Questionnaires. These are issued by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) to assess the impact of error corrections on compatibility between rolling stock and infrastructure. The results are incorporated into BCA Reports and provide an important basis for further decision-making within the European rail sector.
The development and implementation of the new process are described in detail in a recent technical article published in the August issue of Signal + Draht.
