Most of the infrastructure projects are still in the planning phase, which means that the information provided on these pages reflects the current planning status and is updated regularly.

The lines Düren – Aachen Süd (2600), Aachen Hbf – Aachen West (2550) and Aachen West –Aachen-Gemmenich (2552) are to be equipped with the European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2). However, the existing control and safety technology (LST) in the planning area does not allow continuous equipment with ETCS L2. In addition, there are interlockings within the planning area, some of which have a ban on conversion due to their age and condition, which means that neither conversion nor expansion of the systems is possible. For this reason, the existing systems are to be completely replaced by digital (DSTW) and electronic interlockings (ESTW).

In order to be prepared for the future requirements of Digitale Schiene Deutschland (DSD) and to meet the EU requirement to equip the most important routes with ERTMS, the new construction of the LST with integration of ETCS is absolutely essential. The project aims to convert the existing LST to digital interlocking technology within the entire planning area. At the same time, the lines are to be equipped with ETCS L2.

In addition, the construction of a new operational center (BSO) at the location of the network district in Aachen Rothe-Erde is planned. In future, the entire area will be controlled from this location using an integrated control and operating system (iLBS). The technical systems center (TSO) required for this will be built at the Cologne site as part of the parallel project Operations Control Strategy (BSS) and is scheduled to go into operation in 2027.
