Modern interlocking for Cologne-Mülheim: construction work to start in April
The expansion of digital control and safety technology in the greater Cologne area is progressing: from April, DB InfraGO will start work on a latest-generation interlocking system at the Cologne-Mülheim site as part of the Digitale Schiene Deutschland initiative. With this measure, we are creating the basis for more efficient, reliable and punctual train services between Cologne-Mülheim and Bergisch Gladbach - an important commuter route in the Cologne junction.
As a first step, we are equipping the S-Bahn line between Cologne-Mülheim and Bergisch Gladbach with the latest digital interlocking technology and building additional points. In the target state, the over 100-year-old mechanical interlocking in Bergisch Gladbach and parts of the relay interlocking in Cologne-Mülheim will be replaced by innovative digital technology in three new modular buildings at the Cologne-Mülheim site. The listed interlocking in Bergisch Gladbach will be retained as a historic building.
The modernisation will enable more efficient operation, increase reliability and improve the punctuality of trains. At the same time, we are preparing the line for the planned double-track line and, with the new technology, creating the conditions for the future introduction of the standardised European train control system ETCS. DB InfraGO is investing a total of around 85 million euros in the modernisation project.
The start of construction is imminent: this year, specialists will initially carry out extensive underground cable construction work along the route. This will involve installing around 15 kilometres of cable routing system, excavating almost 70 shafts and creating around 20 track crossings. Unfortunately, this will require several weeks of full closures between Cologne-Mülheim and Bergisch Gladbach, as the safety of train traffic cannot be guaranteed during the work. The line will be fully closed from 10 April to 3 July 2026. The S-Bahn line S11 will be replaced by buses during this time. Further night-time construction work will then take place from 9 July to 4 September. Additional line closures are also planned for the coming year.
We are aware that these measures will mean restrictions for residents and commuters. Our aim is to carry out the work as efficiently and smoothly as possible in order to minimise disruption. All timetable changes and replacement concepts will be published in good time before the start of construction in the electronic travel information systems and on notices on the platforms. Up-to-date information is also available at any time at zuginfo.nrw.
With the new interlocking and the modern infrastructure, DB InfraGO is investing in the viability for the future of regional and local transport in the Cologne area, thus achieving another milestone on the way to digitalising the entire Cologne rail hub.
