Digital interlocking (DSTW) Warnemünde

The Warnemünde digital interlocking (DSTW) marks a significant advance in the rail infrastructure by enabling digital control in the long-distance and conurbation network in Germany for the first time. It replaces the existing relay interlocking and now also controls long-distance passenger traffic in the region.

Warnemünde digital interlocking

The Warnemünde digital interlocking (DSTW) is part of the latest generation of interlockings and was implemented as part of the pre-series projects for digital control and safety technology (DLST). The DSTW in Warnemünde replaced the existing relay interlocking and is the first of its kind in the German long-distance and conurbation network that also controls long-distance passenger traffic.

In the first construction phase, track field concentrators (GFK) were set up in Lütten-Klein and Warnemünde Werft in order to integrate the new digital technology. The traffic controller now controls the signals and points in the section between Rostock-Bramow and Warnemünde-Werft from a temporary control center in Warnemünde.

Reconstruction of the Warnemünde long-distance and regional station

The Warnemünde station, including Warnemünde-Werft station, is located in the north of the Hansestadt Rostock and serves long-distance and regional trains as well as ferries and cruise ships. The planning approval decision for the modernization and expansion of the station was issued by the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA) in December 2017, and the construction work lasted from October 2018 to May 2020. The project was completed on 19 May 2020.

Following the December 2019 schedule change, the new Dresden - Berlin - Rostock long-distance line was put into operation and extended to Warnemünde as of May 2020. To enable ICE trains to use the station, the platforms were lengthend to 370 meters, benefiting long-distance travelers and special tourist services in particular.

Implementation:

Construction phase 1:

  • Installation and equipping of the DSTW in the Rostock-Bramow to Warnemünde-Werft section, including the installation of 9 points, 26 signals and the interior of the interlocking.
  • Construction of track concentrators (GFK) in Lütten-Klein and Warnemünde Werft to integrate the new technology.
  • Commissioning on October 30, 2019.

  Construction phase 2:

  • Dismantling of the passenger tunnel and construction of a new, barrier-free crossing in the northern area of the station to enable a comfortable transition between train, city and ship.
  • Construction of two new long-distance platforms (platforms 4 and 5), each 370 meters long.
  • Optimization of the track plan, including the adjustment of the track position, the renewal of the superstructure and the construction of 13 points and 20 signals.

As part of the pre-series projects (VSP), the new digital interlocking - (DSTW) - with modular interchangeable components was tested and prepared for the subsequent series projects.

Benefit:

- Qualified testing of all processes, subsystems and also of the overall system of digital signaling technology (DLST)

- A secure basis for the realisation of series projects
